The Roman Catholic Church St. Ignatius, a parochial school and rectory residence is located in downtown Sanford, Maine. It was built in 1893 to accommodate French-Canadian immigrants who were working in the mills at the time. Development of St. Ignatius Apartments will involve the rehabilitation of the existing three-story building and a new construction addition to create 66 affordable housing units for the elderly. The project would result in 42 units in the existing structure, composed of 12 efficiency units, 24 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units, along with a 24-unit addition, composed of one efficiency unit and 23 one-bedroom apartments. The new apartments will be within walking distance to Main Street, the waterfront, and the Mills.
